How Long Should Physical Therapy Last for an Injury?

If you or someone you love has recently suffered an injury, you might be asking, “How long should physical therapy last for an injury?” We’ll give you the answer up front — exactly as long as it needs.
We understand this is an unsatisfying answer. In reality, there are many factors that go into how long someone should undergo physical therapy. The timeline is dependent on the type of injury, your age and physical health, frequency, and much more.
Physical therapy isn’t just about treating pain. It’s also about ensuring the body heals properly, restores movement, and even helps provide resilience against future injuries.
At ZK Physical Therapy & Chiropractic, you can be sure that your timeline is personalized and focused on long-term health over rushed treatment.

How Physical Therapy Helps Heal and Prevent Injuries
Physical therapy is a set of practices designed to restore strength, mobility, and functionality, while relieving pain. Our physical therapists use evidence-based techniques to help the body heal without the use of surgery or medication.
With a therapy plan that is custom designed for each patient, we use manual therapy, specialized exercises, guided movements, and education to improve circulation and blood flow, decrease inflammation, and help injured tissues heal properly. As treatment progresses, therapy often focuses on rebuilding strength and balance, as well as coordination and flexibility.
Our bodies are remarkable machines, but when injured, they need a bit of extra help to heal in the way that they were originally designed to work. Physical therapy is that bit of extra help. How long the body can benefit from physical therapy is unique to each body.
Factors That Affect How Long Physical Therapy Might Last for an Injury
Many factors help determine how long someone may need physical therapy. In general, depending on the type and severity of the injury, as well as other factors, programs can last a few weeks to a few months. Some people see improvement almost immediately; others take much longer to see results.
Type and Severity of the Injury
Likely the biggest factor in the therapy timeline is how severe your injury is and the type of injury. In general, injuries that are more severe will take longer to heal and require more time in physical therapy. Some types of injury accidents, such as car accidents, where ligaments are harmed, or slips and falls where a bone is broken, may require more time than mild muscle sprains, for example.
Your Age and Health Level
As we age, our bodies slowly lose the ability to heal themselves as quickly as the young. Younger people will often spend less time on physical therapy than the elderly.
Likewise, those in good health will also generally spend less time on physical therapy than those in poor health because the body is able to devote more resources to healing.
Frequency of Sessions
Some people may benefit from more frequent physical therapy sessions. Most programs will have you or your loved ones visiting us one to three times per week. While increased sessions may be beneficial to some, rest is also of the utmost importance. Your physical therapist can help you determine what is best for you.
Will and Participation
Your desire to get better, how hard you try during exercises, and how well you adhere to any home regime will determine the length of the program as well. People who complete their home exercises regularly, for example, will generally heal faster and need less therapy than those who skip sessions.
We understand adherence can be difficult and never judge any of our patients, but at least partially, many will get out of physical therapy what they put into it.
Your Individual Healing Rate
Everyone heals differently, and ZK Physical Therapy & Chiropractic recognizes this. Some people need more time, others less. The good news is, we do not take a one-size-fits-all approach. We will create a unique plan just for you, and from the outset, you should have a good idea of how long your treatment may take.
During the course of treatment, we’ll also constantly reassess your progress and adjust your personal treatment plan as needed.
There’s No Simple Timeline for Physical Therapy
At ZK Physical Therapy & Chiropractic, we recognize there is no simple timeline for physical therapy. Each body and injury is different, and true healing requires individual intervention and as much time to heal as needed. For some, this may be a few weeks. For others, a few months.
