JOINT REPLACEMENT | POST SURGICAL PHYSICAL THERAPY

DID YOU KNOW: Physical therapy plays a key role in the rehabilitation of people who have received a total joint replacement of the knee, hip, or shoulder.

Postoperative rehabilitation is of the utmost importance following total joint replacement and any surgery, in order to ensure the pain-free function of the joints and muscles and to improve the patient's quality of life. Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic, or ceramic device called a prosthesis. Such surgery can be performed on any joints of the body, including the hip, knee, ankle, foot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers. Physical therapy is important to:

  • Reduce pain, muscle soreness, and swelling after surgery

  • Increase circulation in the body especially to your legs and feet, which is important for preventing blood clots

  • Restore mobility in joints

  • Assist with regaining muscle strength

  • Assist with walking using walking aids (as needed)

“Good things come to those who wait. Bad things can come to those who weight.”

UNKNOWN

Being both overweight and inactive compromises a person's health and longevity. Physical therapy can help patients become more functionally independent, while teaching the importance of understanding body composition, and various health risks. We help overweight and individuals managing obesity to become more active and fit by teaching them how to move in ways that can be pain-free and even enjoyable. We focus on:

  • Teaching correct posture

  • Teaching right-fit movement patterns

  • Promoting regular exercise programs

  • Pain management – Foot, knee, joint and muscle pain resulting for excess weight and obesity.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato

Occupational therapy is an area of rehab focused on improving one's ability to perform daily activities more efficiently. From school and social settings to supporting older adults living with physical and cognitive changes, OT helps them prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability. Occupational therapy aims to provide individuals with the modifications and tools they need to live as independently as possible.

Occupational therapy services typically include:

• An individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,

• Customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and,

• An outcomes evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met and if changes to the treatment plan are required.

PAIN MANAGEMENT REHABILITATION

“Pain is such an uncomfortable feeling that even a tiny amount of it is enough to ruin every enjoyment.”

Will Rogers

Physical therapy for pain management can help to:

  • Flexibility training to improve range of motion and reduce spasticity

  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

ZKFACT: Exercise is the only intervention that can have lasting effects on function after a spinal cord injury, both in promoting neural recovery and in reducing secondary complications
